American Craft

August 14th, 2010

I had some time to read American Craft  Magazine in the studio yesterday.  I really liked the article about a bronx priest fashion designer who creates a high end but social responsible clothing line.   This article was inspiring.   It makes be think about how I can use my talents more to help others.  He used is artistic ability as a tool to give back .  He creates jobs in the U.S. and in South America,  he also produces school uniforms for children in need. That is whats up!

Handmade Ceramic Pouring/Batter Bowls

June 11th, 2010

I was thinking of making some more pouring bowls. I love making and using them. I use mine for mixing pancake batter, and that’s exactly what I want for breakfast. I use it for non pouring purposes like making fruit salads, storing my lemons, garlic or shallots when I buy them. It’s just a nice big bowl. All my ceramic handmade pottery can go in the microwave if needed. It’s too big for oatmeal or ice cream, but on a hot N.Y.C summer day I might be able to polish off some ice cream in a bowl that size!
I have some available in my etsy shop!

Handmade Ceramic Pitcher from the Met Museum collection

June 10th, 2010

I love going to the Greek and Roman galleries in the Metropolitan Museum of art. I could stay in the galleries all day to study ceramic work of the past. There’s so much see and draw from.

Wheel Thrown Tumblers

June 2nd, 2010

This is what I worked on yesterday. I gave myself an assignment to make cylinders that I felt had a graceful silhouette that I don’t have to trim. I usually trim all my pots. I really like this shape. These wheel thrown pots will become large drinking cups I hope to put in my etsy shop. I hope they will still be fairly large after the firing because clay shrinks a lot, so I have to make my pots a lot bigger to start with.

Bam Dance Africa 2010 Art Market!

June 1st, 2010

I had a chance to strike a pose with fellow artist Marjorie Borgella of Yes Lioness. If you haven’t seen her work, you must visit Yes Lioness shop now. She is so talented I love her use of color in her paintings and her t-shirts are of great quality.

The crowd was non-stop! and It was such a nice weekend for a fair.

I have a few more pics I will post later to my Flickr.

Greek and Roman Pottery

May 25th, 2010

I have been getting a lot of new ideas from the Greek and Roman galleries in the Metropolitan Museum of art. I love visiting the galleries and this cup is one of my favorites. I have been working with dark brown stoneware clay again and also getting into drawing more too. This drinking vessel is so well balance to me, the image and placement of the handles. These are all things I think about when making my work.

Handmade Wheel Thrown Plates

April 29th, 2010

I had a pretty good day at the studio. I spent most of my time trimming plates. Making and trimming plates can be tricking because you got to make sure the thickness of the bottom and side of the plate is the same for the most part. The plate should not be heavy at all and it should have a nice size foot ring for stability. For those of you who are not familiar with this process. Here’s a brief summary:

Trimming or turning a pot is the second step after forming the desired pot. Once the pot has been dried for a little while it must be trimmed. In this step you are cutting off the excess clay from the bottom and sides and smoothing the sides of any rough areas or uneven areas. This is also where you can very the bottom from a flat bottom to an indented bottom. For this step, the pot must be centered by using your finger or by using a straight tool. Place the pot in the center as best you can and Slowly turn the wheel, when ever the the tool hits the pot, it needs to be moved up the wheel a little bit. Once the pot is centered then place three pieces of extra clay around the pot to hold it in place. Use the trimming tool to go around the pot and gently take off the excess clay. Once the pot is the shape you want it, then it is time to be fired.

I promised myself I would go to bed early. If I get to bed before midnight I guess that early.

Strawberry Hemp Quinoa Smoothie

April 27th, 2010

This recipe is a must try!

I’m always looking for creative and tasty ways to add great grains like quinoa in my diet. For this recipe you will need a blender. I use a stick blender which works great with less clean up. I love my stick blender. Use organic strawberries not only because strawberries are treated with very large amounts of pesticides, including fungicides. Organic strawberries taste better and have much more flavor. I bought a pint for $2.99 and I used about half for this recipe. One thing I forgot to measure how much this recipe yields, so if you make it let me know!

Ingredients

1 cup cooked quinoa
1 cup chopped strawberries
3 tbsp Agave syrup
1 cup hemp milk (almond or rice milk would be fine)
1 cup water

Place quinoa, strawberries, agave and 1 cup of milk in blender and process until smooth. Add remaining liquid and blend. Chill and serve cold. Try it and share what you think!

Simple, easy, healthy and good……
Enjoy
